In a significant move to modernize Indian Railways, Union Minister of Railways, Information & Broadcasting, and Electronics & Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Switzerland. This partnership aims to create a comprehensive framework for collaboration in various areas, including technology sharing, track maintenance, management, and construction.

During the MoU signing ceremony, Vaishnaw highlighted the government’s commitment to upgrading the railway system in India. He emphasized that this collaboration would bolster the capabilities of Indian Railways and lead to improved service for passengers and freight operations.

Albert Roesti, Federal Councilor and Head of the Federal Department of Environment, Transport and Communications (DETEC) of Switzerland, expressed confidence that Switzerland`s advanced railway technology would significantly benefit Indian Railways. He noted that the collaboration would enhance operational efficiency, safety standards, and overall service quality.

The original MoU, signed on August 31, 2017, was set to expire after five years and focused on key areas such as traction rolling stock, railway electrification, and station modernization. To facilitate ongoing cooperation, a Joint Working Group (JWG) was established, holding meetings to discuss various aspects of the partnership. The most recent meeting took place on October 11, 2023, where Indian officials presented ongoing capital expenditure initiatives, showcasing substantial investment opportunities for Swiss companies in the Indian railway sector.

This renewed partnership is poised to improve the efficiency and reliability of railway services across India. Swiss companies are expected to provide essential machinery, materials, and tunneling consultancy services, contributing to the modernization of railway infrastructure.

The event was attended by prominent figures, including Mridul Kumar, Ambassador of India to Switzerland, along with other distinguished guests, marking a crucial step forward in international collaboration for Indian Railways.
